During his career, J. Hodge Alves, III, practiced in the fields of general litigation, maritime law and environmental law (with an emphasis on litigation). He was born in Alexandria, Louisiana, and grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, and Falls Church, Virginia. Hodge was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1969, the Washington State Bar in 1973, and the Alabama State Bar in 1974. He graduated from The University of the South, B.A. cum laude 1966, and the University of Virginia School of Law, J.D. 1969. He served with the United States Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps from 1969 to 1973 and as a law clerk to The Honorable Daniel H. Thomas, United States District Court, Southern District of Alabama from 1974 to 1975. Hodge is a member of the Mobile County Bar Association, the Maritime Law Association of the United States and the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers In America for maritime law each year since 1995. Hodge has previously served as the Firm’s representative to the CPR International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution. Hodge has received CPR’s training for mediators, but his practice in the area of mediation has been primarily as advocate for parties. Hodge follows the practice of early case evaluation and consideration of alternative dispute resolution options with clients from the outset. He was the 2000—2001 President of the Mobile Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and was Chairman of the Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute for 2004.
