Mr. Edwards had a unique and distinguished career in public life. While in the Congress he was on the Appropriations Committee where he served for many years on the Transportation Subcommittee. He was best known, however, as an expert on National Defense having been the senior Republican for ten years on the Defense Subcommittee of the Appropriations Committee. He also served on the House Banking Committee.
He was elected Secretary of the House Republicans September, 1972, and elevated in June, 1979 to Vice Chairman by unanimous vote. He acted as coordinator of the successful effort in Washington to assure construction funds for the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway.
In the years after his return to Mobile, Mr. Edwards continued his public service as Chairman of the Board of the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce. In recent years Edwards devoted himself to constitutional reform, education, the environment, and economic development in the Mobile area.
In addition to his law practice and his public service work, Mr. Edwards also served on the corporate boards of The Southern Company, Holcim Inc., Northrop Grumman Corporation, QMS, Inc., Dravo Corporation, The Aerospace Corporation, and Collegiate Housing Foundation.
